About IEEE Columbus Section
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. As of 2023, IEEE boasts over 460,000 members across more than 190 countries . The organization is structured into 10 geographic regions, which are further divided into local sections and branches.
The IEEE Columbus Section traces its roots to the early 20th century, when the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) established a local section in Columbus, Ohio, on March 17, 1922. The AIEE, founded in 1884, focused on the burgeoning fields of electric power and wired communications. In 1963, the AIEE merged with the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE), established in 1912 to advance radio and wireless technologies, forming the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This merger unified the electrical and electronics engineering communities under one organization.
Today, the IEEE Columbus Section is part of IEEE Region 2 and serves as a central hub for IEEE activities in the Columbus, Ohio area. Our section encompasses a diverse network of branches, including student branches at local universities such as The Ohio State University and DeVry University Online , technical society chapters, and affinity groups. These entities work together to support professional development, foster innovation, and promote collaboration within the engineering, computing, and technology communities.
Members of the IEEE Columbus Section have access to a wide range of conferences, workshops, publications, and continuing education opportunities designed to help professionals stay at the forefront of their fields. Globally recognized, IEEE continues to be the trusted voice for advancements in technology and innovation.
